The Bridal Henna Guide: Planning Your Wedding Henna

When to book, when to apply, and how to plan a mehndi that peaks on your wedding day.

When to book

Wedding and festival seasons fill up fast, and bridal henna takes a big block of time, so enquire as soon as you’ve set your date. A few months ahead is ideal, especially for weekends and dates close to Eid and Diwali.

When you enquire, share your wedding date, where you’ll be getting ready, and whether you’d like henna for family and guests too.

When to apply

Natural henna takes 24 to 48 hours to reach its deepest colour, so bridal henna is best applied one to two days before the wedding. That way your stain peaks on the day itself, rather than looking bright orange in your photos.

If your celebrations run over several days, with a mehndi night, nikah, sangeet or reception, we’ll help you choose the timing that suits the day that matters most.

Planning your design

  • Coverage. Decide how far you’d like the design to go, from wrist-length to the elbows, and whether you’d like your feet done too.
  • Style. Rich Indian bridal patterns, flowing Arabic and Khaleeji florals, or something in between.
  • Personal details. Many brides hide initials, a meaningful date or motifs from their culture in the design. There’s a tradition of hiding the groom’s initials for him to find.
  • Your outfit. Send a photo of your outfit and jewellery so the design complements them.
  • References. Share a few designs you love. Shehnaz draws every bridal design freehand, shaped around you.

On the day of your application

Full bridal henna is detailed work, so plan for several hours in the chair, and make it comfortable:

  • Arrive with clean, dry skin, with no lotion or oil on your hands, arms or feet.
  • Wear something loose you can sit in for a while, with sleeves that roll up easily.
  • Eat beforehand, and keep snacks and a drink with a straw nearby.
  • Have a friend or family member with you to help while your hands dry.
  • Keep the evening free: your henna needs time.

Good to knowMany brides turn their henna application into a mehndi night, with music, food and family around them. Ask about henna for your guests too.

Aftercare for brides

Your bridal stain is made in the day after your appointment. Keep the paste on overnight, avoid water for as long as you can, and stay warm. Our aftercare guide explains each step.

Henna for your family and guests

Lighter, quicker designs for your mum, sisters, bridesmaids and guests let everyone share in the celebration. Mobile bookings start from five guests, and brides are the exception. See wedding henna for the details.
